Janam Kundli explained

What is a Janam Kundli?

A Janam Kundli, also called a Kundli or Vedic birth chart, is a map of the zodiac positions of the Sun, Moon and planets for a specific birth date, time and place. In Vedic astrology, the chart is interpreted through the twelve zodiac signs, twelve houses, the ascendant (Lagna), the Moon sign (Rashi), Nakshatras and planetary placements.

This free Kundli generator calculates the core D1 or Rashi chart directly from the details you enter. It is designed for people who want the underlying birth chart first, before moving on to interpretation or asking personal astrology questions.

After the calculation, you can download your Kundli as a PNG image containing the core chart details, D1 houses and planetary positions so you can keep the result on your device.

What does this Free Kundli Generator show?

Lagna / Ascendant

Your rising sign and its degree at the recorded birth time and birthplace. Lagna determines the first house in this calculator.

Rashi / Moon Sign

Your sidereal Moon sign. Rashi is calculated from the Moon's position in the Vedic zodiac at birth.

Nakshatra & Pada

Your birth Nakshatra and its Pada, calculated from the Moon's sidereal longitude across the 27 lunar mansions.

D1 / Rashi Chart

A twelve-house birth chart showing the signs and Navagraha placements using Whole Sign houses.

Planetary Positions

Sidereal signs, degrees and houses for the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.

Rahu & Ketu

The lunar nodes are included using the node convention selected in the Kundli GPT tool settings.

Step by step

How to generate your Kundli online

  1. Enter your date of birth. Use the date on your birth record whenever possible.
  2. Add your exact birth time. Birth time is especially important for calculating the ascendant and house layout.
  3. Enter your birthplace. Use city, state and country so the tool can resolve the correct latitude, longitude and time zone.
  4. Select Generate My Kundli. The calculator converts the local birth time to UTC and calculates the chart.
  5. Review the result. Check Lagna, Rashi, Nakshatra, D1 chart and planetary positions before moving on to interpretation.

Why exact birth time and birthplace matter

Your date of birth is not enough for a complete house-based Kundli. The birthplace provides the geographic coordinates needed to determine the local horizon, while the recorded birth time determines where that horizon was positioned relative to the zodiac at the moment of birth.

The ascendant changes throughout the day. If the recorded time is inaccurate and the Lagna is close to a sign boundary, a relatively small time difference can change the Lagna sign and the Whole Sign house sequence. If you do not know your exact birth time, treat the Lagna and house results as uncertain rather than guessing that they are exact.

Calculation transparency

How this Vedic Kundli is calculated

The calculator first resolves your birthplace to latitude, longitude and an IANA time zone. It then converts your local birth time to UTC, calculates astronomical positions for the birth moment and converts the tropical longitudes to the sidereal zodiac using a Lahiri ayanamsha calculation.

ZodiacSidereal
AyanamshaLahiri approximation
D1 housesWhole Sign
Nakshatras27, four Padas each
GrahasSun through Saturn + Rahu/Ketu
Birth timeHistorical time-zone conversion where available

Different astrology programs can produce slightly different values because they may use different ephemerides, ayanamshas, lunar-node conventions, house systems, historical time-zone data or rounding rules. Differences are most noticeable when a planet, Moon, Nakshatra or ascendant is very close to a boundary.

How to read your free Kundli result

Start with Lagna

Lagna is the sidereal sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. In this tool the Lagna sign becomes House 1, and each following zodiac sign becomes the next Whole Sign house.

Then check Rashi and Nakshatra

Rashi is your Moon sign. Nakshatra divides the zodiac into 27 lunar mansions, with each Nakshatra divided into four Padas. Together they describe the Moon's exact sidereal placement more precisely than the Rashi alone.

Review the planetary table and D1 chart

The planetary table gives each Graha's sidereal sign, degree and house. The D1 chart shows the same information spatially so you can see which houses contain the Navagraha.

If you want to move from chart calculation to conversational interpretation, you can use Kundli GPT to explore questions about your own chart. You can also browse the Kundli GPT blog for astrology guides.

Common questions

Free Kundli Generator FAQ

Is this Kundli generator free?

Yes. The core Janam Kundli calculator can be used without creating a WordPress account. It generates the D1 chart, Lagna, Rashi, Nakshatra and planetary placements.

What details do I need to generate my Janam Kundli?

You need your date of birth, exact birth time and birthplace. A name is optional and is not required for the astronomical calculation.

Can I make a Kundli using only my date of birth?

A date alone can provide some planetary positions, but it is not sufficient for a reliable ascendant and house-based birth chart. Exact time and place are needed for the Lagna calculation.

What if I do not know my exact birth time?

You can use the closest reliable recorded time you have, but treat the Lagna degree and houses as uncertain. A guessed birth time can produce a different ascendant, especially near sign boundaries.

What is the difference between Lagna and Rashi?

Lagna is the sidereal sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. Rashi usually refers to the sidereal Moon sign. They are calculated from different astronomical positions and can be different signs.

Which ayanamsha is used?

This calculator uses an independent Lahiri sidereal approximation based on Indian Astronomical Ephemeris reference values and precession formulae.

Can I download my Kundli as an image?

Yes. Generate your chart, then select Download Kundli Image. The PNG is created in your browser from the calculated result and saved to your device.

Which house system is used?

The D1 or Rashi chart uses Whole Sign houses. The ascendant sign is House 1, and the following zodiac signs become Houses 2 through 12 in order.

Why can my Kundli differ from another website?

Astrology programs may use different ayanamshas, ephemerides, node conventions, house systems, historical time-zone sources and rounding methods. Results close to boundaries can therefore differ.

Does a Kundli predict the future with certainty?

No. Astrology is interpretive. A Kundli should not be treated as a guaranteed prediction or as medical, legal, financial or other professional advice.
